'Metastructures' - a set of separate yet interconnected pieces of music by Fish Slappa, written early-mid 2020. Each a different mood, a different instrumental palate, yet all sharing the same compositional aesthetic.

Each of these tracks was composed by writing pieces of code in ChucK which generate random MIDI compositions within certain parameters and constraints. The results are then linked into MIDI synthesisers in external software, and edited down into recognisable tunes and ideas. The result is a set of compositions that are tonal yet not strictly melodious - they imitate the superficial trappings of more conventional electronic composition, but are at the same time alien. For each instrumental part, the 'structures' that the composition uses as its basis are described - chord shapes, possible note ranges for each voice, a few select ostinato sections and overarching patterns. What is left up to random generation is the way in which these structures are organised - chord progressions, inversions, modulations, and in most instances the finer details of melody - the 'metastructures'. All of the sounds on this EP were synthesised, organised, and compiled through some combination of Reason, Reaper, and ChucK programming. No instruments, no samples - only generation and manipulation.
