CRUMBLING WALL OF SOUND

A two-part exploration of layered computer-generated sound.

The two pieces were created with patches of ChucK code generating sound fed back through a series of delays to create a cohesive wall of sound effect as more and more patches and ideas become layered on top of each other. Each patch is permitted to play a certain array of notes, far enough apart to avoid harmonic clashes but also not consistent with any particular key. The resulting wall of sound that has built up by the end of each piece is therefore as consonant as it is atonal.

The pieces move between sections of ambient melodiousness, indecipherable harsh noise, and rhythmic industrial music as different ideas and textures gradually fade in and out.

Developed in a series of live performances around Australia. Recorded in my bedroom using a laptop running ChucK code into two speakers, recorded on a Zoom microphone and then mixed in Reaper.
